Michelle Greene

Michelle R. Greene joined the Barnard faculty in 2023, following appointments at Bates College and Minerva University and a research position at Stanford University. Prof. Greene earned a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from MIT and did postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and Stanford University. 

Professor Greene’s research explores the neural and computational mechanisms underlying visual scene perception, focusing on how humans and machines categorize visual scenes. The NIH and NSF have supported Greene’s work, including creating the Visual Experience Dataset, a large-scale video and eye-tracking dataset of daily human activities for vision research. Most recently, Greene received an NSF CAREER award for work on the efficient coding of visual, structural, and semantic scene information.

Professor Greene's teaching at Barnard includes introductory psychology, statistics, and a seminar on the psychology of imagination. Professor Greene is an Associate Editor for the journals Attention, Perception, and Psychophysics and Open Mind.
